A big off with only 2 stages to go.

It was the final day of the ARC Great Lakes Rally today. But the talk of the rally was the untimely death of ex-world rally champ Colin McRae in a helicopter crash. Colin was a great hero of mine. He was one of the most attacking drivers in any form of motorsport and never seemed to back off. Proof that it is a very small world was that I had been talking and photographing his brother Alastair only yesterday.

But back to a much happier subject. Simon & Sue Evans have almost clinched the Australian Rally Championship again after winning the Great Lakes Rally in Forster NSW today. Although plagued by technical issues and several time delays I actually really enjoyed this rally and with the great weather conditions got some nice shots. Steve Glenney was exciting to watch as always and was in 2nd place until a big off with only 2 stages to go.

Eli Evans also had a big excursion into the scenery. Second place went to Simon's TRD teamate Neil Bates, keeping the championship alive until Rally Melbourne. Although he only has a slim chance of catching Simon. 3rd was Ex Mitsubishi Ralliart driver Spencer Lowndes just edging out Dean Herridge who is almost certain to win the seasons Privateers Cup.
